Tanzania's Kidunda Dam Project in Top Gear

Posted on : Friday , 1st September 2023

The Dar Es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (DAWASA) expects to spend $425.9 billion in the 2023–2024 budget year on the implementation of seven water projects, consequently the Kidunda Dam Project's operations are scheduled to continue. The dam has been hailed as an immediate measure for regulating water flows in the Ruvu river, an essential water supply for Dar Es Salaam and the Coast areas that accounts for more than 90% of the total amount of water delivered for residents of business urban areas. According to Kiula Kingu, the current CEO of DAWASA, the development of the Kidunda Dam Project, which has a 190 million square metres of maximum carrying capacity, is projected to cost 346 billion dollars. The dam's renovation could provide a remedy for the challenging water management conditions in Dar es Salaam and the Coast areas.

Mr. Kingu highlighted a few benefits of the Kidunda Dam Project, including the construction of a 75-kilometer road and an extension bridge that will enhance regional transportation and the generation of 20 MW that will be integrated to the national power system. For a number of reasons, the Sh329. 5 billion project in the Morogoro Provincial Area has been postponed for an extensive period of time. A total of 78 km2 will be the area covered by the dam reservoir. In addition, a gated spillway with a 133-meter length and 117-meter width will be constructed. The tailrace canal is expected to be 103 metres long and 30 metres wide. It will be consisted of a 20 MW-producing outdoor powerhouse. Additionally, outlet works will be built, with each double barrel being 200 metres long.

President Samia attended when Dawasa and Sino Hydro signed the deal to construct the eagerly awaited Kidunda Dam Project in Morogoro in November 2022. In response to the increasing demand for water delivery in Dar Es Salaam, President Samia once again suggested that the construction of the Kidunda Dam would be the best option. Lastly, The project as a whole will require the transfer of 2,000 families or 5,000 people.
